Enabling SSL Access to AD LDS (Lightweight Directory Services)
We recently had some issues recently implementing SSL on a Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services box.
Here are some of the errors we were seeing:
- LDP.exe shows Cannot open connection when attempting connection using SSL over port 636
Windows System Event log:
- Description: A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key. The error code returned from the cryptographic module is 0x8009030d. The internal error state is 10001.
- Description: No suitable default server credential exists on this system. This will prevent server applications that expect to make use of the system default credentials from accepting SSL connections. An example of such an application is the directory server. Applications that manage their own credentials, such as the internet information server, are not affected by this.

Unexpected errors when setting up FTP site in IIS 6 on Windows 2003
One of my coworkers called me over today to look at an issue they were having setting up an FTP Site. They could only run the FTP site when the Default Website was stopped. These are the error messages that came up during troubleshooting:
Error: Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740
Error: The process cannot access the file because it is currently being used by another process.
ESX Error: unable to access file since it is locked
While attempting to attach a VMDK to a Virtual machine I encountered this message:
Unable to access file <unspecified filename> since it is locked
Make a bootable ESX 3.5i USB stick from a Mac
As part of our migration to virtualized infrastructure we needed a temporary location to store our server images. The only server that was available was an old 32 bit IBM system with IDE drives that the ESXi installer did not want to recognize.

A little over a year ago I helped fix a corrupted Windows Live Movie Maker project file. This post describes the process I went through to isolate the problem and repair the file.
